About us, Our stories and values

Why is fresh air so important?

Fresh air is often deprioritised because of the accompanying noise from either the city or nearby industry. Why should we prioritise ventilation more, and what do we actually gain from it?

Fresh air increases productivity and minimizes error.

  • Research shows that employees who work in fresh air complete tasks up to 10% faster and with fewer errors.
    • DTU (2000); Milton et al., Indoor Air (2000)

Fresh air reduces number of sick days.

  • Poor ventilation can increase the number of sick days among employees by up to 35%.
    •  Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (2016)

Fresh air in the bedroom increases productivity the following day.

  • A night’s sleep in a well-ventilated bedroom increases productivity the next day.

Our story

It all started with an idea on a hot summer day in 2024, when I was working at my previos job located right next to Copenhagen Central Station. The office was hot, and the heavy air made everyone feel sluggish, until someone opened a window. It was incredibly nice and refreshing, but it also caused just as much frustration because all the annoying street noise came straight into the office. I could see everyone putting on headphones or moving to other rooms to take calls, and overall, the atmosphere was very disrupted. It frustrated me endlessly that you literally had to choose between fresh air and quiet.

I spent a few months mulling over the problem and talking to friends and acquaintances about my frustration. Then one day, I had a real “Aha” moment when a possible solution came to me. A sound-reflecting curtain? A curtain that would send the noise back out to the street while still allowing air and light to pass through. I then got to work at the drawing board, and two months later, in January 2025, I had the first prototype. It wasn’t very pretty, but it worked! It achieved a noise reduction of 5.5 dB (3 dB represents a doubling of sound energy), and I was ready to start validating my problem statement and business plan.

In May 2025, SilentCurtains ApS was founded, and since then, we have been developing both the product and the company. We can now reflect up towards 15 dB, and we aim to continue improving both ourselves and the product.
